Be brave…

“Maybe there’s a way out of the cage where you live. Maybe one of these days you can let the light in. Show me how big your brave is…”  Sara Bareilles

Getting an email today asking me to participate in a collective Carpool Karaoke video (which I didn’t even know was a thing until I got the invite…) so I needed to propose a song to sing. After listening to brief clips of old favorites all the way back to “Ain’t no Mountain High Enough,” I came upon “Brave” by Sara Bareilles.  The video will make you laugh and want to dance.  And the words feel super easy to sing loud in a mini van or a shower or getting out of bed or onto the bus…

The verse that begins

“Everybody’s been there, everybody’s been stared down
By the enemy
Fallen for the fear and done some disappearing
Bow down to the mighty
Don’t run, stop holding your tongue…”

has been hitting a personal chord lately, or probably more often than I would usually admit to. My prayers to live fearlessly without wanting or demanding that life turn out the way I want. Trying to focus on living for the work, not the fruits of the work requires daily vigilance in building a business.  So the idea of belting out

“Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave

With what you want to say
And let the words fall out
Honestly I wanna see you be brave”

Feels like a kind of celebration. Celebrating the raw goodness of just being fully in the moment, no excuses, saying what you wanna say- no matter who you are sitting with. Whatever might get lost is probably not worth the freedom that comes from just speaking your truth. And then dancing through it all joyously.

It seems more than ever the world needs us to:

Let your words be anything but empty
Why don’t you tell them the truth?

Being brave with our words, with our heart, with our intentions is a kind of magic that connects us to more than just the people we count among our most dear. Bravery connects us to the will of the universe that wants love to win. That dares us to live in our deeply erotic soul.

Watch for my carpool karaoke debut.
