They say that exercise is the best medicine, and I couldn’t agree more! I love working out after a long day at the office as it instantly lifts my mood and clears my mind. In order to get the most out of a workout, it is helpful to make sure you are focused on your mind-body connection.
Here are a few ways to make sure you are being mindful at the gym:
My fellow yogis know that breath is imperative to the practice - but this isn’t just limited to yoga! For example, if you are lifting weights, it is recommended that you inhale as you lower the weight, and exhale while lifting the weight. Runners can experiment with a breath pattern that works well for them, but many suggest inhaling through the nose for a couple steps, and exhaling through the mouth for 2-3 steps. Depending on your form of exercise, different breathing techniques will work better than others - but make sure you take the time to focus on your breath throughout your fitness session.
This is a big one! Make sure you are tuned in to what your body is telling you about exercise. Maybe you had planned to hit the weight room on a specific day, but your body is feeling like a Pilates class would be better. Don’t be afraid to switch up your routine to accommodate what your body needs. Also, if something causes pain or discomfort during your workout, then stop! If your body says something feels wrong about that exercise, you should definitely listen.
Sure, it can be hard to unplug during the day, but try to put your phone away for just an hour during your workout. This will allow you to be fully focused on exercising, without the constant buzzing and ringing of your cell!
Try these mindfulness tips during your next gym session, and you’ll reap even more benefits during your workout.
