Mindfulness is such a buzzword, it might be challenging to take it seriously. But, one area in which mindfulness can be incredibly helpful is with food!
Here are some ways to practice mindfulness while eating, so you can fully enjoy the experience of your meal:
There’s nothing I hate more than eating in a rush - grabbing food while on-the-go, or eating at a desk, or while in the middle of another task. When you eat, try to do nothing else but...eat! One easy way to do this is to sit down at a table, especially for meals at home. If your office has a break room, do your best to break away from your computer screen and sit down in front of a table for your meal. This will help eliminate all other distractions, for just a few minutes, so you can enjoy your food.
Another way to eat mindfully is to put away your screens during your meal - yep, this means no phones (or tablets, or computers!) If you’re scrolling through Facebook during a meal, then your mind will be more focused on your friends’ lives than on the delicious meal in front of you. Take a break from the digital noise and put the phone away!
Another great way to be mindful of your meal is to make sure you are eating off a plate (or bowl) instead of out of a package. This isn’t always possible, especially if you’re in a rush and grabbing take-out, but try it when you can. For example, one of my favorite snacks is hummus and carrots - I never eat hummus directly from the package, though. Instead, I’ll take a couple of spoonfuls and put it on a plate along with the veggies. Doing this sets an intention for your meal and can help you be more mindful of portion sizes, too.
