FAQ: Why Use An Organic, Water-Based Lubricant?

What is an organic water-based lubricant?

Lubrication makes sex better — an effortless glide means less irritation, more pleasure, and a deeper, longer-lasting connection with your partner.

Although our bodies produce natural lubrication when we’re aroused, it isn’t always enough to make intimacy the magical experience it can be. Dryness during sex is extremely common, and can occur for many reasons, including aging, childbirth, and common medications, and sometimes for no reason at all. Dryness doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with you, it doesn’t mean you’re not into your partner, and it isn’t anything to be ashamed of — but it is something you can plan for, by keeping a convenient all-natural personal lubricant ready by the bed.

But what’s the best all-natural lube to use? There are a few things to keep in mind. First, the most common type of personal lubricant on the market is a water-based lube, which is easy to clean up, safe to ingest, and won’t damage latex condoms or toys. There are other types of personal lubricant out there: Silicone-based lube can last longer, but also degrades toys and stains your sheets and clothes, while oil-based lube degrades latex condoms and is associated with an increased risk of infections such as bacterial vaginosis (BV). On the whole, natural water-based lubricants are the best personal lubricants for most people.

Unfortunately, many personal lubricants include ingredients that you won’t want anywhere near your most sensitive tissues. Moreover, the wrong lube can disrupt the vagina’s delicate pH (acid-base balance) and osmolality (salt balance), again inviting infections. That means the best water-based lubricant is a pH-balanced, iso-osmolar, paraben-free, petrochemical-free, and glycerin-free lube. Furthermore, women are increasingly looking for an organic water-based lubricant, which can bring you a seductive slide without the health concerns that come with so many conventional lubes. If you like to use your mouth during sex, look for an edible lube, and if you or your partner have allergies, you might want to make sure you have a hypoallergenic lube.

When to use organic lubricants?

A good lubricant enhances any kind of sex, whether anal or vaginal, partnered or solo, with or without toys. In a study of over 2,400 women, water-based personal lubricants were associated with increased pleasure and satisfaction in vaginal sex, solo sex, and anal sex. Of course an all-natural lube is crucial when there is little or no natural lubrication, but as a rule wetter is better — even if you have enough natural vaginal lubrication to get by, an added dollop of natural lubricant can supercharge your encounter, turning acceptable to ecstatic.

In fact, the psychological link between lubrication and arousal means that an organic lubricant can serve as an aphrodisiac. There is a common myth that arousal has to come first, then sex; although we recommend becoming aroused early and often, the truth is that arousal can go hand in hand with gentle, lubricant-assisted touching and play. Just because you aren’t producing natural vaginal lubrication doesn’t mean you don’t want to have sex! Bringing some organic lube into the picture can jump-start your body’s arousal reaction and help you feel more sexy.

Some women also use an organic lubricant as a daily vaginal moisturizer to ease dryness after birth control or menopause. Although there is nothing wrong with using all-natural lubricants this way, there is also a class of vaginal gels that are formulated slightly differently and make ideal feminine moisturizers.

How to use all-natural lubricants?

Reach for an organic personal lubricant any time there’s friction — one part rubbing against another. Water-based lube is safe on skin, latex, and toys, and is safe to ingest, so don’t be afraid to get wet. If any lube gets on sheets or clothes, clean-up is as easy as throwing them in the laundry.

Of course, there are a few basic rules you should follow when using any lubricant, water-based or not. Always use safe sex practices by keeping lubricant use specific to each area, and not reapplying lube from the anus to the vagina or mouth. Wash your hands and mouth thoroughly after sex.

How to put on lube? It’s simple: just squeeze out a quarter-sized amount into your hands, and apply to the penis, vagina, or anus. Water-based lube warms easily, so rub your hands together to generate some heat before applying to sensitive tissues. You can apply natural lube both before and during intercourse, and reapply it as often as you like.

If you’re wondering how to use lubricant with sex toys, that’s easy too: Squeeze out liberal amounts of organic lube and apply to dildos, vibrators, and other toys prior to insertion and use. Reapply as needed to keep things moving effortlessly.

What are the benefits of using natural, water-based personal lubricants?

Using good lubricants will help you find more pleasure in every intimate moment, and ultimately a deeper connection with your partner. The benefit of using a natural lubricant instead of a concoction of glycerin and petrochemicals is that you can get the vaginal lubrication you need for intimacy without compromising your health.

The vaginal ecosystem is delicate, and introducing the wrong substances can put you at risk for bacterial vaginosis (BV), yeast infections, and other mishaps. To avoid all that, look for a feminine lubricant that mimics natural vaginal lubrication. Studies show that personal lubricants that don’t match vaginal salt balance (“hyperosmolar” lubricants) can damage both cervical cells and rectal cells, which may increase your susceptibility to a variety of infections. On the other hand, natural lubricants that do match your salt balance (“iso-osmolar” lubricants) leave cells healthy. You don’t need any cell damage in the most sensitive parts of your body — so reach for the iso-osmolar lube!

What about ingredients? Glycerin, a common ingredient in conventional lubricants, breaks down into sugars which become a perfect food for the yeast that cause yeast infections. Furthermore, studies show that glycerin is associated with increased transmission of genital herpes. Ready for a glycerin-free lubricant yet? It gets worse: Parabens, which you’ll also find in many lubricants, may disrupt hormone balance and have even been associated with breast cancer. As for petrochemicals like propylene glycol, we just don’t think a chemical used to make antifreeze and printer toner belongs in the bedroom!

So what do you put in a lube without glycerin, parabens, or petrochemicals? We think aloe vera works great as a base for the best organic lubricants. If you’re already using aloe to treat minor cuts and scratches, or just to keep your skin healthy, the idea of using it this way might sound strange — can aloe vera be used as lube? In fact, aloe vera lubricant is ideal for most people: soothing, moisturizing, and natural. Although we don’t recommend pure aloe vera as lube, Good Clean Love makes an organic aloe lube that is pH-balanced, iso-osmolar, and perfect for everyday intimacy without any of those dangerous additives.

What you can expect when you buy an organic, water-based lubricant from us?

When we started Good Clean Love in 2003, the personal lubricants on the market were based on petrochemicals, glycerin, and other substances which, while they might be slippery, aren’t exactly great for women’s health. We set out to make the best organic personal lubricant for women — one that not only increases pleasure and connection during sex, but also supports the health of everyone who uses it.

Almost Naked is an organic lube that is iso-osmolar and pH balanced. In fact, in an NIH-funded study on personal lubricants, Almost Naked was found to be the product most iso-osmolar to natural vaginal lubrication, meaning it will not dehydrate or damage vaginal tissue. Almost Naked is made with aloe, and is safe to use with all sex-toy materials, and with latex or polyisoprene condoms (but not polyurethane). And best of all, this edible lubricant is organic — no petrochemicals, parabens, or glycerin, and our low-micro variety of aloe lets us use just the smallest amount of body-safe preservatives. Almost Naked is also certified non-toxic by MADE SAFE.

Good Clean Love is committed to women’s health, and as a B Corp, we’re also committed to social and environmental sustainability. In 2018, Almost Naked became the first certified carbon-neutral personal lubricant; that means that for every bottle of Almost Naked purchased, we donate to a soil restoration project that reduces greenhouse gases by an amount equivalent to that bottle’s carbon footprint. And we donate 10% of the proceeds from our website to Change for Women nonprofits. When you buy a natural lube from us, you can expect the most current science on women’s health, the highest-quality body-safe ingredients, and a commitment to a sustainable future for all.
