Read the Fine Print: What An Ingredient List Can Tell You

Not all lubricants are created equal, and reading the fine print on the bottle can tell you why. It holds one of the most important clues to how a product will actually feel and behave inside your body.

The key word to know: osmolality.

Iso-osmotic means a product's concentration matches your body's natural fluids, so your vaginal lining isn't disrupted. That match supports healthy pH, lasting moisture, and a balanced environment. (Psst: all Good Clean Love products are proven to be iso-osmotic.)

Hyperosmolar means the opposite. A hyperosmolar product pulls moisture out of your vaginal lining, which can cause irritation and create an environment where harmful bacteria thrive. In a recent clinical study, women using a hyperosmolar lubricant saw increased BV risk over time, while women using an iso-osmotic lubricant didn't.

Terms to Remember:

01: HYPEROSMOLAR: Pulls water out of cells
Draws moisture from your tissue to dilute itself, which can strip the vaginal lining and cause micro-tears, which creates an easy entry point for irritation and infection.

02: ISO-OSMOTIC: Matches your body's fluid balance
Sits close to the same concentration as natural mucosal fluid (around 380 mOsm/kg), so it moisturizes without disrupting anything underneath.

03: Vaginal pH: Keeps protective bacteria thriving. A healthy vaginal environment sits mildly acidic, around 3.8–4.5, maintained by lactobacilli. Products formulated outside this range can throw off that balance and leave you more open to irritation and infection.

WATCH FOR: Ingredients that work against you

Propylene Glycol: Much heavier than human tissue. it's always hyperosmolar, no matter where it sits on the label.

Glycerin (listed 1st–2nd): Fine in smaller quantities, but near the top of the list it's both hyperosmolar and a sugar, feeding the exact yeast it can trigger. 

Parabens: Methyl-, propyl-, butylparaben and the like are preservatives linked to endocrine disruption.

Chlorhexidine Gluconate: An antiseptic that wipes out protective lactobacilli along with anything harmful.

Nonoxynol-9: A spermicide that's abrasive enough to damage the vaginal lining with regular use, raising infection risk rather than lowering it.

Synthetic Fragrance / Parfum: A common irritant and one of the least regulated words on any label, "fragrance" can legally hide dozens of undisclosed chemicals.

LOOK FOR: Ingredients that work with your body

Aloe Vera (as base): Naturally soothing and close to the body's own osmolality, which makes it a workable foundation for iso-osmotic formulas.

Hyaluronic Acid: Holds onto moisture without pulling it from anywhere else. It hydrates without disrupting your natural fluid balance.

Lactic Acid: Supports the mildly acidic pH that keeps protective lactobacilli thriving.

Agar Agar: A seaweed-derived thickener that adds slip and cushion without synthetic polymers or added sugars.

Tremella Extract: A snow mushroom-derived super hydrator that holds up to 500 times its weight in water, with polysaccharides that support skin's elasticity and antioxidants that soothe sensitive areas.

Flavor: When sourced food-grade, flavoring is held to the same safety standard as what you'd eat.

Three things to check before it goes in your cart: 

  1. Check the first five ingredients. Position matters, as an ingredient near the top is present in a much higher concentration than one near the bottom.

  2. If in doubt, look for an osmolality rating on the product listing. If it's not published, you can email the brand and ask. 

  3. "Clean,” "natural,” and “pH-balancing” aren't regulated terms. The ingredient list is the only claim that has to be accurate.
