Vaginal Microbiome 101: What It Is, Why It Matters, and How to Take Care of It

June 22, 2026

You've probably heard a lot about the gut microbiome: the idea that your digestive health depends on a thriving community of bacteria living inside you. The vagina has its own version of that community, and it's just as important.

What makes the vaginal microbiome distinct from the gut microbiome is that it actually functions best when it's less diverse. While variety is generally celebrated in the gut, the vaginal microbiome thrives when one particular group of bacteria is in charge: Lactobacillus.

On Lactobacillius

Your vaginal microbiome is a living community of microorganisms that live in and around the vagina. Scientists have identified over 500 microorganisms that can call the human vagina home, though any individual vagina hosts only a small number of species at a time.

In a healthy vaginal environment, one group of bacteria tends to dominate: Lactobacillus. These beneficial bacteria, especially the species L. crispatus, often account for 90% or more of the microbial population.

Lactobacillus bacteria are the cornerstone of a healthy vaginal environment. They produce lactic acid, which keeps vaginal pH in an optimal range (typically between 3.8 and 4.5) making it inhospitable for harmful pathogens. They also defend against yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis (BV), and certain sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

What Can Throw It Off?

  • Antibiotics wipe out good bacteria along with bad, often leaving the vaginal microbiome depleted and vulnerable

  • Hormonal shifts, from your cycle, pregnancy, perimenopause, or hormonal birth control, change estrogen levels, which changes glycogen production, which changes the whole balance.

  • Diet plays a role too; diets high in sugar and processed foods can promote the growth of harmful bacteria

  • Sex introduces new microorganisms, and unbalanced products (condoms with spermicide, conventional lubricants) can affect vaginal pH

What Happens When It's Imbalanced?

An imbalanced vaginal microbiome is behind most cases of vaginal discomfort. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) and yeast infections are the most common outcomes, but the effects go further than many people realize.

An imbalanced vaginal microbiota is associated with increased susceptibility to STIs (including HIV, herpes, and chlamydia), complications during pregnancy including preterm birth, and even fertility challenges. Vaginal pain and discomfort, some of the most underreported types of pain in women's health, can often be traced back to it, too.

That's why we say vaginal health is whole-body health. When the vaginal microbiome suffers, so does your comfort, your confidence, and often your overall wellbeing.

The Importance of Testing

One of the most challenging aspects of vaginal microbiome health is that imbalances often have no obvious symptoms, especially in the early stages. You can have low Lactobacillus levels, an overgrowth of harmful bacteria, or even an undetected STI without feeling any different than usual. That's what makes testing so important, and why establishing your baseline is one of the most proactive steps you can take when beginning to learn about your vaginal microbiome.

Build Your Vaginal Health Routine

Balance Moisturizing Wash - Formulated with organic aloe vera to calm irritation and dryness, Balance Wash soothes even the most sensitive skin while our proprietary lactic acid blend actively supports beneficial Lactobacillus and helps maintain a healthy acidic pH, your body's natural defense against harmful bacteria.

Restore Vaginal Moisturizing Gel - Dryness is one of the first signs of microbiome imbalance, especially during hormonal shifts. Restore relieves dryness and helps maintain optimal pH so your vaginal environment can function naturally through every phase of your reproductive cycle.

Reset Homeopathic Probiotic Suppositories - When you need to replenish Lactobacillus directly, Reset delivers beneficial bacteria exactly where they're needed most, helping restore and maintain balance from the inside out.

This World Microbiome Day, consider it a reminder: the small, daily choices you make for your microbiome add up to something much bigger. When you know how this ecosystem works, you can make choices that keep it balanced.
