“Healing is a matter of time, but it is sometimes also a matter of opportunity.” –Hippocrates
I was invited to participate in a community Healing Touch offering. All you have to do is sign up and a certified practitioner spends 45 minutes sensing and balancing your energy through the laying of their hands on you. It doesn’t really matter what you believe about the metaphysics of energy work; the truth is that when someone touches you with the intention to heal you, something magical happens.
The power of our hands to heal each other is perhaps the most immediate and powerful mechanism available to anyone to access the healing potential in each of us. The international organization was founded by a nurse in 1989 and trains both medical professionals and lay people in the treatment of everything from supporting cancer patients, healing acute and chronic pain conditions, improving recovery from surgery, as well as calming anxiety, depression and reducing stress.
Like forgiveness, the power of focused human touch does not erase the memory and experience of pain, but helps to carve our a new way to remember our body and our hearts. Through touching each other, we transform our pain into hope. Helen Keller, no stranger to pain and suffering once said, “Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.”
One of the most core level lessons in positivity is how healing is not so much about “getting better” as it is learning how to let go of all the expectations, beliefs and weight that isn’t really you at all. Opening up to being deeply touched, developing the felt sense and patience involved in touching others is like a spiritual surgical knife, cutting away everything that isn’t you.
