What we call things matters. Our naming process, whether conscious or unconscious, comes to define how we think and experience ourselves and the world. For too long, reproductive health has been designated with terms like “feminine hygiene” and “family planning”. Not only is this language exclusive, but it is lacking in accuracy.

The truth is that the most challenging and significant relationship in any and every life is the one you have with yourself. It is the foundation for all the other relationships that your life holds and, in fact, dictates both your capacity to love and be loved by everyone else. Seeing through this lens, it is clear that the circumstances and relationships on the outside are a mirror of the peace or turmoil that is present within my relationship with myself. 

With COVID-19 keeping many of us away from loved ones, friends, extended family, and even new romantic partners, we have never been so collectively starved for physical touch. But our decline in physical touch didn't start with the pandemic. Experts have reported a decline in hugs for over a decade. We are more apprehensive than ever to embrace and touch the people in our lives for fear that it could be unwanted or misinterpreted, whether that's the workplace, the classroom, or even out with friends.
