Sharing a Bed

Interesting article in the New York Times today about the People who share a bed and the things they say about it… The author Paul Rosenblatt interviewed 42 couples, most heterosexual married, but the study also included a small sample of homosexual non-married couples. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 61% of Americans share their bed and surprisingly, of the individual’s polled by their most recent survey, 62% preferred to sleep with their partners rather than alone, even with the sleep disruption that co-sleeping often includes.

Having shared my bed for my entire adult life, I know the problem solving and conflict resolution that goes on about sleeping habits, who joins us in bed, the weight of the blankets, the amount of light in the room, the window open or closed… How we work through this most intimate part of sharing a life is a deep reflection of our relationship. The most successful sleep arrangements, like the most enduring relationships rely on the couple’s sensitivity to each other’s needs and a willingness to compromise.

It probably shouldn’t surprise me, but when asked why they sleep together, sex was seldom mentioned. While I concur with the deep connection that comes from co-sleeping, I can’t believe the number of people who are missing out on the best part of co-habitation: sex.

So tonight, get some rest, and then tomorrow night, stay posted because were going to talk about the other kind of sleeping together. The kind that can make you young.
